Job Description

The Benefits Director is responsible for leading the strategy, operations, administration, compliance, communications and change management for Advance’s health and insurance, wellness, welfare and financial plans.  This role ensures our plans and programs are competitive, cost-effective and compliant with current and emerging regulations.  The director role will lead a team of benefits professionals as well as numerous teams with outsourced benefits recordkeepers. S/He will play a significant role in partnering internally with senior leaders and externally with providers to ensure best-in-class service and advocacy for our Team Members.

The incumbent in this role should be a thought leader with strong attention to detail, accustomed to working in a fast-paced, dynamic and high-growth company. This role will report to the Vice President, Total Rewards and have three (3) direct reports with a total team of five (5).

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategy Development: Develop and gain leadership support for an annual and 2-3 year benefit strategy for our health, welfare, wellness, financial and paid time-off programs; analyze plans’ market competitiveness, financial performance, compliance and team member engagement, and devise a cohesive, holistic and comprehensive benefits strategy that delivers plans that are innovative, aligned with external market trends, cost competitive and meet the current and future needs of our team members.
  • Plan Financial Ownership: Oversees plans’ financial performance by leading carrier and benefits consultant periodic financial reviews, planning and problem solving to ensure our benefit programs deliver expected returns-on-investment and remain within approved annual operating budgets; delivers periodic plan-specific financial reporting to leadership.
  • Vendor Management: Acts as relationship manager for each significant benefits vendor contract, ensuring all contractual provisions are complied with and all service level agreements, including team member satisfaction are being met or exceeded; Conducts period/regular vendor performance reviews and ensures all near and longer-term operational requirements and goals are being met. 
  • Benefit Administration: Leads the benefits team and outsourced service provider teams, to ensure the day-to-day administration of our benefit plans is efficient, cost-effective, timely, accurate and complaint with all federal and state laws and regulations; partners with in-house ERISA counsel to stays abreast of emerging laws and regulations and ensures timely operational compliance of all applicable plans; leads cross-functional teams to implement or change benefit programs, vendors and systems.
  • Care for Our Team Members:  Ensures team members’ awareness, understanding, appreciation and engagement with all of our benefit plans by delivering creative, innovative timely and relevant communications and engagement tools.
  • Leading Partners: Coordinate with internal and external partners to resolve complex issues, ensure timely and accurate transfers of data and aligning resources to provide best-in-class service to our team members

  • Bachelor’s degree and 10+ year’s progressive experience in Human Resources, with a focus on benefits plan design and administration, with a minimum of 5+ years’ management experience. Advanced degree preferred.
  • Experience working in a Fortune 300 organization preferred
