Job Description

The Broad Institute of MIT & Harvard is seeking a Benefits Specialist who will be responsible for assisting with the administration of all benefits and retirement programs, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, leave of absences, 401(k), as well as commuter benefit programs.

In addition, the Benefits Specialist will partner closely with the Senior Benefits Specialist and others on projects and initiatives that align with the Total Rewards strategy.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions**):

  • Work closely to support  benefits eligible employees via the ticketing system Service Now & via email

  • Assist with processing employee leave of absence requests  with leave of absence vendor

  • Assist in the coordination of open enrollment, including organizing and hosting annual onsite flu clinics

  • Ensures the accuracy of all benefits enrollments in the HRIS to provide vendors with accurate eligibility information

  • Assist with the writing and creation of communication pieces, such as open enrollment guides, internal Intranet content, etc.

  • Works closely with other team members to maintain documentation of all plan processes and procedures

  • Partner with benefit vendors, escalating and resolving issues

  • Manage ADA accommodation requests, collaborating with HR Partner team and legal counsel as needed

  • Escalate benefit HRIS integration issues ensuring any issues are resolved in a timely manner

  • Manage Evidence of Insurability (EOI) process for Voluntary Life Insurance, approving or denying coverage in HRIS system (Workday)

  • Responsible for processing and managing Workers’ Compensation claims; partnering with third-party vendor

  • Assist with new-hire orientation

  • Performs quality checks of benefits-related data including quarterly audits

  • Assists employees regarding benefits claim issues and plan changes

  • Responds to benefits inquiries from managers and employees on plan provisions, benefits enrollments, status changes and other general inquiries

  • Works on cross functional projects within the Total Rewards team and the broader HR team (HRIS, HR Partners, Recruiting, etc.) as needed.

Qualifications for Success

To be considered for this role, you must have:


  • Experience/Education: 3  years relevant experience, or two years with a Bachelor’s degree.


  • Demonstrates understanding of HR related legislation, practices, processes, programs and technology

  • Experience with facilitation of variou  benefits for employees. Previous support for open enrollment is a plus   

  • Must be positive, detail oriented, quality focused, organized, team oriented and a driven problem solver, multi-tasker, and self-starter with the ability to prioritize in a fast paced environment

  • Strong working knowledge of Human Resources policies, procedures and programs

  • Demonstrates strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills and conflict resolution experience

  • Ability to work with all levels within the organization and apply good judgment in resolving sensitive/confidential employee benefit and leave of absence issues

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word and Powerpoint, Google Suite, and Zoom

  • Proficiency with human resources systems (HRIS). Experience with Workday system is a plus.
