Job Description:

Reporting to the Vice President for Human Resources (VPHR), the Chief of Staff oversees a wide array of HR initiatives, projects, and communications delegated by the VPHR in support of the strategic priorities of University Human Resources (UHR). The Chief of Staff manages the administrative operations for the office of the VPHR and serves as a key point of contact for internal and external campus partners and stakeholders working with the Vice President for Human Resources. The Chief of Staff is a member of the VPHR’s leadership team, and collaborates with the VPHR, UHR leadership team, UHR Staff and campus partners to advance the HR strategic, administrative and operational excellence initiatives of UHR and the University.

Major Responsibilities:

Lead and Manage HR Strategic Initiatives and Projects

This position it the key point of contact for internal and external stakeholders working with the VPHR, particularly on the development and execution of the HR strategic plan and associated projects designed to advance the goals, objectives, and priorities of the office of the VPHR. This position will lead and manage high priority initiatives and projects that reflect the VPHR’s strategic vision and mission for HR at Brown. Conduct research, analyze findings, and develop recommendations and comprehensive implementation plans to ensure that projects and associated communication and training plans are effectively managed, delivered, and foster high levels of engagement by involving the appropriate UHR staff, campus partners, and stakeholders. Ensure meetings and activities are designed to advance the VPHR’s goals and objectives. Work with the UHR leadership team, HR Business Partners, and campus partners across campus to set agendas that promote the effective and efficient use of time and track the progress of projects. Participate in senior level discussions and decision-making, presenting relevant information, tracking deliberations, decisions, and action plans as well as drafting reports, communications, and other materials, including those presented to the Executive Vice President for Finance and Administration (EVPFA), President, Provost, and campus workgroups or committees.  Provides the VPHR with appropriate and timely updates regarding the progress of various UHR lead initiatives, including applicable HR metrics, and HR data analytics and visualization reports.

Advisor to the Vice President for Human Resources

This position will serve as the advisor to the VPHR on HR related matters, and will also act as a strategic liaison between the VPHR, UHR leadership team, staff, and campus partners and is responsible for coordinating matters for the VPHR that are highly sensitive and/or confidential in nature. Serve as a liaison to local and national organizations and associations.

Communication Planning and Coordination

Lead and develop all communication planning for the office of the VPHR, to include collaboration with the UHR leadership team and campus partners to create and implement UHR strategic communications initiatives utilizing a variety of communication mediums. Ensure that all communications align with the priorities and messaging of the VPHR, EVPFA, and/or the offices of the President, the Provost, and University Communications. Engage with campus partners and constituents to promote transparency and ensure highly effective and collaborative working relationships are developed and maintained in support of a HR culture focused on operational excellence.  Develop presentations, remarks, correspondence, and other communications for the VPHR, including meeting materials for key VPHR lead meetings, workgroups and/or projects.

Manage the Administrative Operations of UHR

Oversee the daily administrative operations for the office of the VPHR and UHR division, including providing leadership oversight for the office and division administrative staff. As designated by the VPHR, facilitate coordination of key onboarding and offboarding tasks for administrative members of the President’s Cabinet and the EVPFA’s leadership team.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university/college, in human resource management, business administration or other related field. Equivalent combination of education and experience with demonstrated supervisory and project management experience. An advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience at a management level.
  • Human Resource experience in higher education, preferred, to include knowledge and understanding of HR issues, challenges, emerging trends, and HR best practices.
  • Knowledge of Workday, project management certification/experience, including knowledge of Agile and/or Lean Six Sigma highly desirable.

  • High degree of professionalism, integrity, and ethics.  Exercises sound judgment, discretion, and the ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and use of enterprise level organizational technological systems and software.
