I BASIC FUNCTION
The Staff Accountant is a collaborative team player responsible for providing accounting and analytical support to CBC’s Unit Tow and Pelican Marine Services business units and performing other general ledger accounting responsibilities as assigned. The Staff Accountant must be a highly organized and motivated team player with excellent communication skills who provides accurate and timely information to help them make better decisions to improve CBC’s performance.
II MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
The Staff Accountant helps provide the discipline, information and analysis to help our leaders manage their business more effectively. To maximize value to the business, the Staff Accountant must be engaged in and understand the business(es) they support, be involved on the front-end of issues, and provide informed information, analysis, and insight to be of maximum value to the decision makers.
Collaborate closely with the Unit Tow business unit and others within the Accounting department and in other areas of the company to ensure accurate accounting for the financial results of our Unit Tow business unit.
Ensure timely and accurate invoicing resulting in payment

Gain a thorough understanding of the systems and processes used to bill customers for the rental of boats and barges operating in our unit tows and make recommendations for improvements as needed.

Compile all necessary information for customer billings for unit tow activities based on communication from our transportation services department, our vendors and our customers.

Generate accurate and timely invoices for our unit tow activities, provide accurate general ledger posting information, and issue invoice packages to customers.

Coordinate with the business unit to collect past due accounts receivable and resolve invoice disputes to ensure timely cash flows and customer satisfaction.
Understand and Engage in the Business

Attend and actively participate in business unit meetings regularly to be informed of current operating activities and meet regularly with affreightment project managers to assess progress and understand expected profitability.

Prepare manual journal entries as needed to ensure revenue and expenses are recognized in the appropriate periods for all unit tow activities .

Coordinate monthly financial review meetings with team members from the assigned business unit and other areas to ensure that financial results are accurate by comparing outcomes with expectations, established budgets and operational metrics then researching and resolving any discrepancies that are identified and providing meaningful information about validated financial results to business unit leaders that will be used to inform decision-making.

Utilize our Tow Works logistics system to produce all billing for our barge fleeting facility, Pelican Marine Services.

Ensure timely and accurate invoicing resulting in payment

Maintain general ledger mapping and other rules as assigned in the Tow Works billing system.

Integrate Pelican billing information into Workday Financials and reconcile revenue between the two systems.

Reconcile the Workday Financials accounts receivable subsystem for Pelican to the general ledger monthly. Research and resolve any discrepancies.

Serve as the value-add accounting subject matter expert for the use of Tow Works for customer billing as related to Pelican.

Perform billing responsibilities for other lines of business as assigned ensuring workflow for the department is balanced to achieve our goals of timely customer invoicing and payment in full for CBC’s services.

Help us systemize knowledge transfer and cross-training and develop methods of sharing information, abilities, and ideas across different areas of our business by documenting Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) for assigned responsibilities to support continuous improvement of the business.

Perform special projects as assigned, including data analysis, and providing insights into the data for management decision making.

IV. EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and 1-3 years of professional experience.

Knowledge of US GAAP and accounting controls.

Experience with general ledger systems. Workday Financials experience is a plus.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.). Intermediate or higher Microsoft Excel skills.

Experience in marine transportation industry desired, but not required.
