SUMMARY 

The Compensation Analyst Lead (CAL) will head the efforts around CNI’s compensation programs.  The CAL’s mission is to provide analytical support to a full range of compensation programs and services, including data analytics, data modeling, market pricing, job evaluation, salary survey participation, pay structure design, reward, and recognition plan administration, merit processing, salary planning, and related functions. Performs activities in support of wage and salary programs.  Along with the team, conducts position monthly audits, analyzes, and evaluates jobs using established evaluation systems, and recommends action concerning appropriate classification and pay level.  May develop and revise job descriptions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. 

The CAL is responsible for the design, development, communication, administration, and implementation of compensation programs, structures, and policies.  Helps to ensure successful implementation of compensation programs and initiatives. Uses exceptional discretion in the handling of confidential and highly sensitive information. 

Administration and continuous improvement of the compensation philosophy and framework; conducts internal and external market research, analyzes competitive position and market trends, recommend, and develops salary structures, and equity adjustments, and develops variable pay programs.

Leads, supervises and mentors assigned staff. Provides training and direction for ensuring the achievement of maximum performance with high standards and exercises supervisory personnel management responsibilities.

Provides expertise and analysis of compensation structure and design.

Provides guidance to ensure the competitiveness and effectiveness of CNI’s compensation program.

Participates in reviews of CNI’s market-aligned compensation opportunities, conducts job evaluations, and advises on internal and external offers.

Performs job evaluations by reviewing new or revised positions and determine appropriate job grades, salary structure, and FLSA classification in accordance with the university’s pay administration guidelines and/or relevant collective bargaining agreement. Assists with creating and maintaining an electronic position description library.

Assists the HR team with reporting and analytics as needed. Compiles metrics used for the annual report, HR dashboard, and on an ad hoc basis for all areas of Human Resources. Compile and reconcile data used for the annual budget book.

Supports and guides management through cyclical salary planning, merit, and incentive plan components of the overall compensation system and address continuous needs related to job evaluation and evolving salary structure.

Reviews compensation analysis feedback on comparable positions, peers, and grades prior to providing management with final compensation analysis to ensure pay equity.

Monitors and ensures compliance with all federal and local laws related to compensation and pay equity and pay transparency while establishing competitive plans.

Assists with the creation and delivery of training to HR, managers, and employees on compensation philosophy, trends, and practices.

Counsels and partners with HR and management teams on compensation matters by conducting job analysis, competitive benchmarking, and structuring of new hire and promotion offers.

Continually researches and evaluates market pay levels and trends and participate in appropriate surveys to develop programs and pay to best attract, retain, and engage talent and support pay strategies and initiatives.

Reviews, analyzes, creates, and revises job descriptions.  Audits jobs for content and consults with managers and supervisors to obtain information regarding job responsibilities, activities, duties, and content.  Evaluate FLSA exemption status and requirements.

Administers or participates in a wide variety of HR and HRIS special projects, as assigned.

   

Plans daily activities within the guidelines of company policy, job description, and supervisor’s instruction in such a way as to maximize personal output.  

Responsible for aiding in own self-development by being available and receptive to all training made available by the company.

Responsible for keeping own immediate work area in a neat and orderly condition to ensure the safety of self and co-workers.  Will report any unsafe conditions and/or practices to the appropriate supervisor and human resources.  Will immediately correct any unsafe conditions to the best of own ability.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE 

Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration or a related field of study and a minimum of seven (7+) years of senior-level compensation analysis experience related to the administration and continuous improvement of compensation programs. 

Three (3+) years of experience leading a compensation team with two (2+) or more years of government contracting experience.

Workday HRIS experience a plus.

CERTIFICATES / LICENSES / REGISTRATION 

Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) preferred.

PHR/SPHR/SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP preferred.

JOB SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES 

Strong experience in implementing, designing, and evolving compensation programs including building pay structures, job profiles/leveling as well and bonus programs.

Exceptionally strong analytical skills and very detail oriented.

Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of Compensation and Human Resources policies, procedures, methodologies, laws and regulations. 

Knowledge of Federal HR concepts, practices, laws, regulations, policies and precedents.  

Ability to review complex compensation plans and processes to determine efficient solutions. 

Ability to effectively advise and assist management in accomplishing personnel management responsibilities related to compensation. 

Knowledge and expertise in developing job analyses and job descriptions to support the hiring process. 

Operational knowledge of HRIS quality assurance/control methods, principles and practices as it applies to compensation management (i.e., job classifications, job titles, pay data, pay grade ranges, etc.). 

Working knowledge of compensation theory and best practices with ability to accurately assess and apply market information. 

Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to conduct studies and investigations, problem analysis, and to develop logical and documented recommendations 

Excellent verbal and written communications skills with ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner. 

Solid proofreading and editing skills. 

Exceptional customer service skills with ability to effectively interact with all levels of employees, including key management officials or their representatives. 

Ability to handle highly sensitive and confidential information with exceptional discretion. 

Ability to function as a technical expert in field of specialty. 

Skilled proficiency in the use of Microsoft Windows / Office programs (i.e., Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.) and HRIS / Spreadsheets. 

Highly detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities. 

Excellent organization skills with the ability to schedule, plan and organize assignments having complex variables and circumstances. 

Ability to work effectively both independently and in a team environment.  

LANGUAGE SKILLS 

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS 

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. 

REASONING ABILITY 

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
