What We Offer

Location
The City and County of Denver supports a hybrid workplace model. Employees work where needed, at a job site several days a week and off-site as needed. Employees must work within the state of Colorado on their off-site days.
What You’ll Do
The Department of Finance manages the city’s investing, fiscal analysis, budgeting, debt and asset management, tax assessment and collection, and accounting functions as well as establishing, maintaining, and enforcing fiscal policies, practices and procedures for the entire City and County of Denver. The Department commits to Denver residents the delivery of these services through a financial structure that mirrors the best practices of both the public and private sectors. This commitment promotes better service, enhanced performance measures, maximum accountability, and improved business processes.
The Office of the Controller keeps the City's ledgers and books, manages payroll and accounts payable; establishes and enforces Citywide financial policies, procedures, and internal controls; produces the financial reports including the annual audited financial statements of the City, and works with agencies to improve financial skills. The Controller's Office is a dynamic environment that seeks innovative ideas that promote effective, efficient, and accountable government while maintaining the highest level of integrity. The Department of Finance is seeking an Accounting Supervisor to join the Controller's Office in the Accounting and Financial Reporting Division.
Specifically, as the Accounting Supervisor, you will supervise a team that manages the City’s tax accounting as well as perform other accounting activities and reporting. The work will be fluid, dynamic, and require the highest level of customer service both internal and external.
Additionally, as the Accounting Supervisor, you can expect to:

Supervise professional and professional support accounting staff engaged in daily accounting functions and activities in the areas of financial transactions, including excise and property tax accounting, payments to vendors and employees, and other account reconciliations.

Oversee the excise and property tax accounting, financial reporting, reporting, and distributions, as well as serve as the Controller's Office subject matter expert/key resource for related matters.

Review and approve financial transactions, including distributions of tax revenue, to comply with intergovernmental agreements, state, and local law.

Serve as the Department of Finance's communication liaison for matters related to the reporting, analysis, accounting, and distribution of tax revenue. Provide support and information to external stakeholders and users of the revenue collected and distributed to outside entities.

Reviews and interprets new legislation and statutes.

Determines impacts to business operations and implements changes to ensure fiscal compliance in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.

Government accounting experience

Excise tax and property tax knowledge is a plus

Required Minimum Qualifications

Education Requirement: Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.

Experience Requirement: Three (3) years of full performance level professional accounting experience reconciling accounting discrepancies, analyzing expenditures, and preparing financial reports.

Education/Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted. Additional appropriate education may be substituted for experience requirements.
