The Hartford has an exciting opportunity to join our Total Rewards team as a Compensation Director, who will lead, design, and execute compensation programs, in partnership with HRBPs, business leaders and the team. The Compensation Director will expand and develop high impact programs that will attract and engage talent with solutions that align to The Hartford’s goals and objectives. The Compensation Team continues to be an enterprise strategic partner while investing in best-in-class technology such as Tableau to maximize the effectiveness of compensation programs. You will be empowered and enabled to positively influence business results through innovation and continuous improvement. The Compensation Director will report to the Head of Broad-Based Compensation and may be based in our Hartford, CT or Charlotte, NC offices, or remotely within the United States.


  • Provide leadership in identifying and addressing emerging compensation trends for assigned client area. 

  • Anticipate pay issues associated with changes in organizational design or business strategy.

  • Counsel business and HR clients on pay strategy, policies, programs, communications, and competitive practice.

  • Lead compensation survey and year-end compensation planning (merit, bonus and LTI) efforts for assigned business groups.

  • Review and analyze the company’s total compensation practices to ensure internal equity and external competitiveness by staying apprised of business conditions, legal requirements, economic environment, and competitive practices.

  • Lead cross-disciplinary project teams in the development and implementation of performance-based pay programs or other enterprise compensation initiatives.

  • Develop compliant, auditable, cost-effective business processes as necessary to monitor on-going delivery and effectiveness of pay programs.

  • Conduct evaluations, surveys, and competitive analyses as necessary to ensure the on-going integrity of existing structures, policies, and practices.

  • May provide training and leadership to compensation team members.  


  • A minimum of seven years of direct broad-based compensation experience required; experience supporting insurance and/or financial services industry experience preferred. At least four years’ experience working in a large corporate setting, preferably at a public company, required.

  • Strong consultative skills, able to effectively coach, negotiate, positively influence/ leads stakeholders.

  • Ability to manage multiple clients and projects, while delivering results.

  • Demonstrated teamwork and collaboration skills.

  • Strong analytical skills required; experience with forecasting and modeling is preferred.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of regulations and issues impacting compensation.

  • Excellent verbal, written, presentation and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Strong business acumen to assess applicability, benefits, and challenges of various compensation structures.

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.

  • Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) preferred.

  • MS Office proficiency required; experience with Workday helpful; experience with Tableau and/or MarketPay or similar tools helpful.


The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$125,120 – $187,680
