The Hartford is seeking an experienced Employee Relations Consultant to join our skilled Employee Relations Team. The ER Consultant will make recommendations to business leaders and influence outcomes on a wide variety of ER matters. The ER Consultant will bring a high degree of professionalism, discretion, and integrity to their work. The ER Consultant will report to the Director, Employee Relations. This role is based in Hartford CT; qualified candidates who are based remotely may also be considered.


  • Provide employee relations consultation and coaching to leaders and employees on a variety of workforce issues, such as  performance & attendance, behavioral issues, job accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act, health & safety, workplace violence, investigations, and terminations

  • Advise on the interpretation of Company policies, progressive discipline and other employee related issues and processes

  • Influence high quality decisions that support company culture, and comply with our Code of Ethics and Business Conduct, HR policies, processes and employment regulations

  • Partner with HR Business Partners (HRBPs), Employment Law, and the Department of Investigative Services to conduct inquiries into internal complaints and assist with investigative actions

  • Build manager capabilities through one-on-one consultation and/or developing and facilitating group training

  • Prepare and analyze ER data to identify trends and share insights.  Maintain strong partnerships with HRBPs in aligned business areas to collaborate and drive improved outcomes

  • Case management and project/reporting work in support of the organization’s COVID-19 Response & Return to Office initiatives

  • Assist in the development and administration of HR policies

  • Contribute to or manage the development, analysis, and coordination of Employee Relations (ER) initiatives that minimize risk, promote continuous improvement, and elevate the capabilities of leaders across the enterprise.  Seek out and understand internal/external trends and best practices

  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of all consultations and actions to ensure quality employee relations case records

  • Represent the organization by providing testimony and any supporting evidence in unemployment hearings and other employment-related legal proceedings as necessary


  • A minimum of three years of HRBP/ER experience in a large complex corporate environment required. Insurance or financial services industry experience desirable

  • Demonstrated exceptional consulting, coaching, collaboration and conflict resolution skills; proactive thought leader

  • Track record of experience resolving and working through diverse and complex employee relations issues; expertise in ER case management  

  • A working knowledge and general understanding of employment law

  • Demonstration of insightful judgment; the ability to influence without authority, assess and manage risk, maintain confidentiality and sensitivity to all issues

  • Proven integrity and demonstrated high level of professionalism with all levels of management and employees

  • Ability to retrieve, analyze and interpret data, identify trends, extract anomalies and develop salient insights to mitigate risk, inform investigative activities, and drive continuous improvement

  • Experience effectively managing multiple competing priorities in a high impact, fast-paced work environment; able to work independently and manage time effectively

  • Experience with Workday, Archer, Tableau (or other case management/reporting systems) and proficiency with MS Office applications, specifically Excel and PowerPoint

  • Working knowledge of change management (ADKAR) and decision making (RAPID) methodologies

  • Effective presentation skills; resilient style and ability to set and maintain a professional, clear, and even-keeled approach

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or related field or requisite work experience


The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$93,760 – $140,640
