Position Summary:

Kemper, a publicly traded, multi-billion-dollar insurance and financial services company, seeks a talented and motivated Director, Accounting to join its Accounting team at its headquarters in downtown Chicago. This is a fantastic role for a strong performer who is looking to help lead the Company’s efforts to transform the Accounting and Finance functions in our Life Insurance division through maximization of process efficiency, automation of manual processes (including the use of bots), and improved speed-to-delivery. This role has significant exposure to GAAP, statutory, and SEC accounting, all within a multi-faceted insurance company (life, health, P&C).

Position Responsibilities:

  • Oversee a team of 2-3 accounting professionals in our Life Insurance division responsible for the preparation and reconciliation of GAAP and statutory financial results as included in Kemper’s consolidated financial statements, as reported to the SEC, the NAIC and the BMA.
  • This position will own specific areas over our Life business including, but not limited to, policyholder benefits, deferred acquisition costs and various intercompany and coinsurance settlements between affiliated companies under Kemper control.
  • Support the Life business unit controller with the preparation, review and analysis of key business trends in monthly and quarterly financial statement analytics supporting the Life results included in our GAAP, STAT and Bermuda GAAP filings. 
  • Support the Life business unit controller with the preparation and review of all the Life related disclosures included in the Kemper 10-Q/10-K, including, but not limited to, the MD&A and Financial Statement Footnotes. 
  • Support the Life business unit controller with the review of quarterly and annual statutory statements for 4 domestic insurance companies and 1 internal insurance company domiciled in Bermuda.
  • Owning key SOX financial accounting controls and interfacing with internal and external auditors as well as business leaders.
  • Serving as a key resource for special projects with the ability to both lead as well as provide meaningful contributions.

Position Qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree in Accounting/Finance. CPA preferred.
  • Ideal candidate will have 8+ years of accounting/auditing experience (public and/or private), including both GAAP and statutory insurance frameworks. Life Insurance experience is a plus.
  • Experience with Workday and/ or Blackline reconciliations and tasks a strong plus.
  • Progressive thinking skills, a strong work ethic, and a knack for innovative solutions.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Ability to identify, analyze and solve accounting and operational issues.
  • Intellectually curious, analytically strong, and embracer of change.
  • The selected candidate will work a hybrid work schedule which will require weekly reporting to our Chicago, IL office.

The range for this position is $125,300 to $208,800. When determining candidate offers, we consider experience, skills, education, certifications, and geographic location among other factors. This job is eligible for an annual discretionary bonus and Kemper benefits (Medical, Dental, Vision, PTO, 401k, etc.)
