Job Description:

In January 2020, Langara College migrated its HR and Finance operations to the cloud-based Workday ERP platform. Langara is now moving into an exciting new phase of transforming its Student Information Systems (SIS) through a suite of solutions, including the Workday Student product. The Senior Systems Administrator is a 3-year term role that will be responsible for the system administration needs of the SIS Program in our Azure tenant and on-premise infrastructure.

The Senior Systems Administrator, Infrastructure, provides technical expertise in executing and developing business centric infrastructure solutions for College wide and internal IT projects. In support of day-to-day operations, this position collaborates with IT teams to evaluate, install and maintain infrastructure systems that may include data and telecommunication networks, business applications, cloud integrations, hosted and cloud environments, etc. Additionally, this position provides third level technical support to end-users, internal IT groups and performs other related duties or projects as assigned.

This individual reports to the IT Infrastructure Manager and is coordinated by the Infrastructure Lead to execute projects and IT initiatives. This position provides coaching and mentorship to junior IT members and works collegially with cross-functional groups and external consultants. In the senior technical role, this individual also participates in the planning and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure service provisioning and maintenance is consistent with College goals, industry best practices and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications Required:

Education & Experience:

  • Two (2) year diploma in computer systems technology, computing studies, or equivalent technology diploma.
  • Completion of recognized industry certification(s) with emphasis in the following areas:
    • Server/storage technologies (e.g., Microsoft on premise and cloud Administrator certification or Role-based Certification, VMWare, Linux, Citrix, etc.)
    • Network administration and security systems design and administration (e.g.  Juniper Network, Palo Alto Network, Citrix Load Balancer, Cisco Wireless, etc.)   
  • IT project management and ITIL certifications an asset (e.g., PMI’s CAPM).
  • Over six (6) years of recent related experience in systems/network administration (on-premise, hybrid and cloud solutions) and security system design.
  • Two (2) years of experience providing third tier advanced level support in an organization with established ITIL practice and modern IT Service Management practice.
  • An equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered.
  • Experience as the subject matter expert implementing various IT enterprise class projects utilizing project management principles, techniques, and methods.
  • Expert knowledge of network management tools and techniques with training and experience in Ethernet switching, routing, TCP/IP, wireless standards, firewalls, IDS, and network load balancers
  • Expert knowledge of security assessment and practices in a variety of platforms, firewalls, intrusion testing, attack mechanisms/associated tools and virtual private networks.
  • Knowledge and system/network administrator level experience of server and desktop virtualization technologies, cloud technologies, storage, VMWare, Microsoft Windows Servers, Linux, desktop OS platforms and thin clients.
  • Knowledge and system/network administrator level experience with integrating on premise systems/infrastructure with cloud systems/infrastructure and deploying cloud infrastructure.
  • Knowledge and system/network administrator level experience designing, planning and deploying high availability/fault tolerant infrastructure and systems for business continuity and disaster recovery planning.
  • Experience in providing advanced troubleshooting, creating builds, and configuring servers; handling the day-to-day management of the server operating system, directory services, essential business platforms and identity management systems.
  • Working knowledge of the techniques, procedures and standards of computer programming, with training and experience in Java or C++; experience in scripting languages such as Powershell, Python and Unix shell scripts.

Working Conditions

  • Ability to safely lift and carry various computer related equipment exceeding 10 kg.
  • Ability to work in environments with minor conditions such as noise, dust and cold.

Hours & Days of Work: 8:30am – 5:00pm Monday to Friday. ​

These hours may be moved to an evening shift depending on organizational needs
