JOB SUMMARY

The Associate Vice President of Finance (AVP) assists and advises the Vice President for Finance and Operations & Chief Financial Officer in university financial planning, analysis, and management for a budget of $125M.  The AVP provides high-energy, positive leadership, management, and development for the functional areas of Accounting, Treasury, Payroll, Accounts Payable, Budget Planning and Financial Management, Bursar’s office, and Contracts & Purchasing. These functional areas maintain the University's fiscal integrity through accurate record keeping and adherence to State, Federal, and University procedures; provide financial reports and analyses as required, safeguard the assets of the University, and deliver fiscal information and support services to faculty, staff, students, and visitors.  In support of the Chief Financial Officer’s role, the AVP also assists with debt management; treasury functions including cash forecasting and management of banking relationships; and Board and Committee relations.  All responsibilities are carried out with a focus on continuous improvement in terms of customer centric best practices.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manages university financial planning and analyses, including the development of methodologies to calculate costs of services, use of measures to monitor the financial health of the University, and maintenance of accurate financial systems for planning and analytical objectives consistent with university decisions and guidelines to ensure financial stability and solvency.

  • Manages the university’ operating and capital multi-year budgets, including consultation, preparation, justification, and administration of the budget process according to university budget guidelines and policies to ensure proper allocation of resources.

  • Maintains the university’s accounting and financial records to produce accurate and valid reports, with appropriate internal controls to ensure compliance with professional standards defined by GAAP, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the Federal government.

  • Manages federal tax examinations, and federal and state inquires, ensuring timely completion of all financial, human resource, payroll, benefit, and financial aid audits and full compliance with GAAP, government accounting standards; proactively identify significant financial or compliance issues for the University.

  • Manages the forecasting and collection of university revenues, ensuring accurate accounting and timely depositing.

  • Manages the University’s debt, overseeing reporting, ratio, and call requirements.

  • Manages the university’s accounts payable and purchasing processes to include purchasing, payment, and delivery methods.

  • Leads change management efforts in support of campus priorities, including the implementation of new business delivery models.

  • Directs strategic planning and quality improvement processes for financial and business services, including the development of meaningful measures/metrics, developing action plans, implementing programs/plans, tracking progress, and communicating results.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • Ten (10) years progressively responsible relevant experience, including at least seven (7) years in a senior level leadership role

  • Demonstrated functional knowledge in accounting; budget management; financial planning, analysis and reporting; payroll; accounts payable; purchasing; financial systems; risk management

  • Advanced proficiency in Excel
     

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPA strongly preferred

  • Experience working in private higher education

  • Working knowledge of Workday Finance and query languages
     

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Able to work occasional evenings, holidays or weekends as needed.
