JOB SUMMARY

The Corporate Tax Director will provide leadership for strategic tax planning and management of all tax operations at Mr. Cooper, including but not limited to tax provision, compliance, tax controversy, transaction planning and diligence, and technical research.  This role will also include managing and developing a high-performing team.  The ideal candidate is an experienced, energetic leader who will build business relationships and will elevate the tax team by focusing on quality, accuracy, and efficiency. This role will report to the VP – Tax.

The Mr. Cooper tax team follows our company’s home-centric model, where individual contributor work will be done remotely on a regular basis. Time in-office will be on a quarterly and as-needed basis and will be dedicated to collaborations more suitable for in-person meetings.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee the quarterly and year-end tax provision process to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting and manage and forecast the effective tax rate for the organization, while maintaining effective control procedures and documentation.

  • Lead tax accounting efforts and provide expertise for the direction and strategy involved in interpreting and implementing financial reporting requirements.

  • Oversee and review federal and multi-state tax return processes, ensuring compliance with applicable tax statutes and regulations in each jurisdiction, and accurately and timely file all necessary income tax returns.

  • Maintain current knowledge on tax policy and law changes that might impact the company and develop the Company’s tax positions and model potential tax implications.

  • Identify and mitigate potential areas of risk and develop enterprise-wide tax planning strategies.

  • Support the Company in business structuring decisions and strategies, as well as M&A transactions, due diligence and structuring.

  • With the VP – Tax, lead the tax team in managing federal and state audits.

  • Lead, motivate and develop highly skilled tax team members with different skillsets at various stages of their careers.

  • Build strong working relationships with corporate and business line finance, legal and business line operations to stay aligned on company goals and objectives and enhance information flows.

  • Collaborate with corporate accounting, treasury, and finance teams on data governance initiatives, building data integrity, completeness, and accuracy.

  • Drive process improvements and the use of tax technology tools, enabling effective data analysis and modeling tax impacts in real time.

  • Assist with special projects and all areas of the Company’s corporate tax function, as necessary.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • 10+ Years of Big 4 experience or equivalent experience in a large publicly traded corporation.

  • 7+ Years of experience with ASC 740 – Accounting for Income Taxes, in a complex federal and multi-state tax business including corporations and partnerships.       

  • Demonstrated skills and experience as a leader, manager, and developer of tax professionals.

  • Strong organization and time management skills.

  • Experience in effectively managing external advisors.

  • Ability to work with corporate and business line departments to implement tax projects in coordination with business objectives.

  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication and presentation skills.

  • Strong emotional intelligence, including interpersonal skill, social awareness, team player.

  • Excellent research, analytical and critical thinking skills.

  • Strong experience and skills with MS Office.

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance preferred.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Advanced degree in Business Taxation.

  • CPA Certification.

  • Experience with OneSource Tax Provision, Alteryx, MS Teams.

  • Applications, PowerBI functions, UI Path, and Tableau.

  • Experience with Workday as primary general ledger system.

  • Financial services or mortgage banking experience.

  • Ability to travel to Dallas Corporate Headquarters once per quarter.
