JOB SUMMARY:

The Budget Analyst will partner with the Director of Financial Planning & Analysis to be the primary liaisons with the Academic and Staff departments to aid in developing and managing their operating budgets. This position will also monitor department operating results, analyze budget-to-actual variances and prepare forecasts as needed. The Budget Analyst will attain/maintain Workday report writing certification and play a primary role in budget report management.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The Budget Analyst performs the following essential duties and responsibilities:

Assist and support the decentralized elements of the College's annual operating budget.

  • Work with the departments to develop and monitor their budgets and avoid shadow accounting systems.

  • Serve as primary liaison with the departments to respond to questions and requests.

  • Provide on-going support concerning the use of Workday reports and dashboards.

  • Provide guidance concerning the effective use of restricted funds.

  • Provide guidance on avoiding deficits in operating budgets. 

  • Assist in the development and management of their annual operating budgets, including providing budget information on individual gifts, budget trainings, entering their budget, and understanding their endowment payouts for integration into the operating budget.

Review and approve supplier invoices, purchase requisitions, expense reports, purchase requisitions, journal entries, employee cost reallocation, employee reassignment, and reimbursements to ensure adherence to donor restrictions and proper accounting charges on all transactions pertaining to the use of gifts and operating funds.

Reconcile complex accounts, identify, and resolve complex issues that span multiple areas, and work with the accounting staff to process corrections to ensure accuracy of data.

Workday financial/budget reporting

  • Maintain Workday report writing certification to gain access as owner of the budget reports to edit, modify, and design new reports.

  • Participate and lead the efforts for Workday release testing that involve new functionalities, and/or possible modifications to the budget reports.

  • Supervise and collaborate with staff in preparing, developing, testing, and deploying budget reports in Workday.

  • Develop ad hoc reports to support management and/or department’s requests.

Perform complex finance functions and activities related to forecasting and analysis.

  • Review and analyze financial data for cost centers to use for performance analysis, donor reporting and/or proposals.

  • Assist with the development and maintenance of financial dashboards and querying large complex data sets from various systems

  • Assist in providing specialized analytical and quantitative analysis to synthesize findings and provide management with actionable recommendations.

Coordinate and assist with special projects/tasks as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in the areas of accounting, financial analysis, finance, economics, mathematics, statistics, business administration, or related field is required or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

  • Experience: A minimum of 3 years of budget fund accounting experience is required.  3 years of experience at an academic institution and service on a management team is preferred.

Deploy professional skills in budgeting and financial analysis, in collaboration with colleagues to best promote the College’s strategic interests.

  • Must have exceptional active listening skills with a strong customer service orientation to find solutions to complex problems, answer unconventional questions, and take firm action when necessary.

  • Must prepare, articulate, and explain complex financial analysis materials (such as income and expense trend analysis and fiscal projections) to staff, faculty, and all other stakeholders in a clear, concise, and non-technical manner.

Must understand the mission of the College’s liberal arts environment.

Demonstrate effective, accurate and clear communication with excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.

Operate computers with Microsoft Office software (such as Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, and PowerPoint) and associated professional software (such as Workday, Tidemark, Internet research and menu-driven databases). 

Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Excel is required. 

Handle all activities and highly confidential information with patience, discretion, good judgment, courtesy and tact while working with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.

Prioritize and perform multiple projects/tasks, meet deadlines/timelines, respond to others in a timely manner, and work both independently and as a collaborative member of the College with a high standard of integrity and ethics, in support of the College’s strategic vision and the division’s annual goals.

Use exceptional organizational, time management, and quantitative analytical skills to evaluate budgetary needs and solutions and to complete work with accuracy and a keen attention to detail.

ANNUAL SALARY:

The annual salary for this role is between $80,000 and $92,000 with a competitive benefits package.  The specific factors that the College will consider when offering a salary to an individual will include, but not be limited to: education, training, relevant prior experience, and performance in prior roles.

REQUIRED HOURS:

The regular hours for this full time position are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday.  Holiday, weekend and evening work hours may be required.  Regular hours may vary due to needs of the College or division.
