Job Description

Job Summary

                                                            

A leader in the accounting and compliance functions of the College. Partner in the preparation of the quarterly financial reports, annual audited financial statements, management presentations, and required filings. Manage Smith’s student loan portfolio and coordinate outside loan service providers. Review reconciliations prepared by others and complete reconciliations for assigned areas. Lead capital project accounting and fixed asset processes. Complete payroll and benefit accrual calculations and closing entries.  Review bank reconciliations and prepare others. Oversee the College’s credit card machines and terminal IDs. Reconcile subledger systems to the general ledger. Review and post journal entries. Become Workday subject matter expert and lead trainings for the Smith community in its use. Understand and enforce policies and procedures.  Participate in continual process change and improvement. Support other members of the controller and finance department as appropriate.

Essential Functions    

                                                

General Accounting (70%)

                                                            

A leader within the accounting team, this position will manage areas of the general ledger closing process, supporting the production of timely and accurate financial information. Process payroll adjustment entries. Prepare payroll and benefit accruals and closing entries and collaborate with finance team to monitor benefit expense and evaluate fringe rate. Assist in the preparation of compliance and management reports and support the annual audit process. Prepare schedules to support compliance filings, management presentations, and audit requests. Complete reconciliations of assigned areas and review reconciliations prepared by others. Prepare and review bank reconciliations. Administer Smith’s credit card program and review and posts revenue. Serve as resource to management and the F&A team in evaluating financial transactions. Respond to inquiries from the community. Collaborate in continual process improvement.  Train and guide stakeholders in processes, policies, and the use of technology.

                                                            

Student Loan Administration (15%)  

                                                

Serve as primary contact and manager for Smith’s student loan portfolio. Supervise collections and collection agency assignments. Support graduates with their loan account. Evaluate special circumstances and modifications.  Complete required reports and manage compliance for federal and institutional portfolio.     

                                                

Capital Projects & Fixed Assets (10%)     

                                                      

In collaboration with the facilities team, create and manage capital project accounting and project reporting.  Lead PP&E accounting: review purchases for capitalization, record assets upon completion of projects, and complete the depreciation expense process.           

                                             

Other Functions         

                                                

Other (5%)      

                                                

Assist the accounting, procurement, payroll and student employment teams in projects and processes. Serve as backup for other team members.  

Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (knowledge, skills, education, experience, certifications, licenses)      

                                                 

Bachelor’s degree and five years of relevant experience and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated intermediate accounting knowledge; non-profit and higher education experience preferred.       

                                                

Experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.      

                                                

Preferred Qualifications        

                                                

Master’s degree and/or Certified Public Accountant. Capital project accounting, knowledge of federal student loan programs, and non-profit financial statement presentation. Workday experience.       

                                                

Skills                

                                    

Excellent written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated customer service experience in supporting users with accounting processes and systems. Deadline and detail oriented. Analytical approach to complicated reconciliation and data problems. Advanced MS Excel skill and proficiency with MS and Google suites and complex cloud-based financial systems.  Familiarity with database queries and reports.  Ability to organize and prioritize work, take initiative, resolve problems, and manage multiple tasks. Capacity to work independently and part of a team.
