The Global Business Services (GBS) Payroll director will support the embedding of the corporate GBS strategy into day-to day working by providing professional global payroll leadership, guidance and support to internal stakeholder groups including, but not limited to, HRIS, HR, Finance, Tax, Compensation and Benefits, Audit, Legal and Company Secretariate, with the objective of adding value, assisting with the development and/or implementation of policies and procedures whilst bringing purposeful solutions to the business. The role leads the global and regional integration project activities country by country, whilst ensuring the GBS centralized location is set up to receive and operate the activities, with focus on constant development of process, policy, and calibration of service provision.

Responsible for ensuring payment to our employees on time and accurately, whilst maintaining compliance with all external regulations and internal policies is extremely important to our global business. Manage day-to-day payroll operations for our international employees through a centralized team in GBS, including implementing continuous improvements to service, effectiveness, and efficiency.

This role will manage payroll vendor relationships, whilst modernizing legacy vendor platforms. Investigate the possibility of reducing vendor count to provide cost efficient services to create a global payroll platform, integrated with our HRIS platform. Drive the reduction of manual input and paper consumption to continue to allow off-site working.

Maintain and reconcile compensation between Payroll output and external Payroll Vendors to ensure data integrity to Sarbanes Oxley standards, complete compliance requirements and respond to audit requests from Senior Finance, Tax and HR team members as and when required.

Create and manage regional team headcount and financial budgets.

This position reports to the Senior Vice President of GBS.

Essential Job Functions

Payroll Process Management/ Delivery Excellence:

  • Support the global landscape of Payroll processes and integration of countries in GBS central locations.
  • Supporting the SVP, GBS & the Senior Director of HR GBS with the developing / refining of business processes and policies, developing workforce impact plan, coordinating communications, coordinating work shadowing activities, executing risk mitigation actions, and leading change within the region
  • Support the integration of processes with configuring, testing and support of Workday
  • Integrate automated download instruction reports from Workday to payroll platforms
  • Drive time tracking plus time and attendance automation from Workday to payroll platforms
  • Ensure Workday and Payroll platforms retain consistent payroll information
  • Support long term strategy with SVP, GBS to determine future opportunities to integrate processes to GBS, execute a continuous improvement strategy.
  • Supports and delivers key metrics to drive standardization, efficiency and effective service to all S&N employees within region and globally
  • Create standardized process for launch of payroll services internationally
  • Own relationship with all vendors, understanding each SLA; work collaboratively on improvements to processes and maintain an optimal network of vendors 
  • Manage the process for new international payroll rollouts; coordinate required actions with senior management in GBS, HR, Legal, Tax, Benefits, HRIS and international accounting firms
  • Manage payroll integrations and/or offboarding of payroll providers in mergers, acquisitions, and divestments
  • Identify and retain expert international Payroll specialists as required to gain a thorough understanding of international payroll requirements and build required compliance processes as required
  • Ensure accurate and timely payroll processing by country; determine best practices for validation process
  • Remain current on all International and local regulations involving payroll matters
  • Create and publish a global payroll KPI dashboard
  • Work with Business Continuity Team to ensure Payroll remains up to date and accurate. Perform BCC testing
  • Provide monthly confirmation to Internal Audit Team that Payroll remains Sox compliant. Perform monthly system access audits and quarterly global compensation changes audits.
  • Ensure SAO compliance for Payroll taxes

Strategy & Planning

  • Support the development and Implementation Payroll strategies with the SVP of GBS that are aligned with global enterprise objectives
  • Provide expert counsel for change initiatives and provide direction on internal communication of those changes.
  • Support, develop and promote feedback mechanisms for employees to influence the continuous improvement of payroll services and processes within GBS.
  • Define and communicate internally-set quality standards; ensure that all aspects of Payroll work to achieve satisfactory quality and consistency within GBS locations
  • To develop a customer focused, professional payroll function which is scalable & flexible to the varied needs of Smith and Nephew
  • To ensure that Smith and Nephew is compliant with employment law and tax legislation globally
  • Responsible for safeguarding payroll procedures and for ensuring that internal controls are adhered to at all times.
  • Review, reconcile and approve monthly global payrolls
  • Manage the payroll process and liaise with HR and/or key stakeholders in the event of any procedural changes or off cycle processes
  • Establish and maintain relationships with key stakeholders
  • Ensure audit readiness at all times and lead implementation of audit recommendations and remediation of any findings

Projects and Initiatives

  • Provide support to the SVP, GBS for the planning, project coordination, and management in support of the Payroll Workstream of the GBS.
  • Lead GBS projects to integrate adjacencies to Payroll into GBS.

Supports Global employment Tax compliance – desired requirements of candidate

Supports company compliance with employment taxes compliance across the worldwide group (approximately 40 countries) with employment tax-related matters, including tax on:

  • Salaries
  • Bonuses
  • Benefits-in-kind
  • Expenses
  • Share-based payments
  • Social security
  • Other employee non-cash or cash equivalent awards
  • Executive incentive schemes

Ensures that the company has up-to-date records and advice in relation to employment tax compliance requirements and procedures. Working closely with, and advising:

  • HR, re benefits-in-kind and expenses, contractors, and GEM awards
  • Global Mobility, re expatriates and short-term assignments/travel
  • Company secretarial, re share-based payments
  • The payroll tax team
  • GBS, in relation to the operation of existing expenses policies and Concur
  • Group Tax, in relation to tax authority relationships, tax audits, intercompany relationships, withholding taxes, and permanent establishment risks
  • Cluster finance business partners, and regional and country finance controllers

Supports oversight of advisers in relation to Executive compensation, and providing input and recommendations into the tax implications of potential schemes

Initially, the role will include identifying and reviewing existing arrangements in all countries, including one-off and/or informal practices

Supporting tax compliance and implications of the Work Unlimited initiative, in particular cross-border and (for certain countries, including the US) inter-state home-based/flexible working arrangements; providing recommendations that add flexibility at the same time as ensuring continued compliance

The role will involve continuous engagement with a variety of key stakeholders across the business, and therefore the successful candidate will need to be able to demonstrate relevant experience, an ability to explain complex matters in a clear and simple way, and to be able to engage effectively with business personnel at senior levels within the organization


  • Global payroll experience. Healthcare or similarly regulated industry experience preferred. 
  • In depth knowledge of workday required.
  • Experience in project and change management.
  • Continuous improvement and Six Sigma experience essential.
