Job Description

The Human Resources Generalist I or II -Benefits, under general supervision, provides moderately complex Human Resources work and plays a key role in the talent management strategy by administering comprehensive benefit and reward programs perceived as highly valuable to our university community to retain top talent. This customer-service minded professional is responsible for actively engaging with our employees to educate them on the benefits received through working at A&M-San Antonio and serve a resource to get the most from of their benefits. The Human Resources Generalist I- Benefits reports to the AVP/Chief Human Resources Officer.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs technical and administrative work in support of human resources programs to include selection of benefit plans, retirement, and wellness.

  • Assists in compiling and preparing reports and documents related to benefits and wellness activities.

  • Enters, updates, and retrieves files and records in Workday the human resources information system, and may assist with the analysis of human resources reports or organizational methods.  

  • Assists in planning, developing, revising, and implementing human resources policies, procedures, and forms.

  • Coordinate open enrollments, changes, and training for employee benefits programs.

  • Coordinate benefits administration to include new hire enrollment, annual open enrollment, and mid-year changes including communication to the university community and managing enrollment data with all vendors and within the HRIS online system.

  • Conduct benefit orientations educating new employees of the details of the retirement, leave, and benefit programs.

  • Respond to human resources-related benefits inquiries.

  • Serve as an initial point of contact for employees directing them to appropriate resources and answering benefit policy inquiries with a high level of customer service, discretion, and confidentiality.

  • Assist with the Health & Wellness strategy that incorporates holistic well-being focusing on physical, mental, financial, intellectual, and social health.

  • Act as the benefits subject matter expert (SME) ensuring benefits policies and practices remain compliant.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in applicable field

  • 0-1 years of prior HR experience.

Preferred Experience

  • Benefits experience in higher education.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications. Knowledge of HR concepts, principles, and practices in relation to benefits and wellness.

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

  • Workday experience a plus.

  • Strong analytical and presentation skills, exceptional interpersonal communication, strong problems solving skills, high level or organizational skills, ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.

  • Flexible self- starter.
