THE OPPORTUNITY 

 

The Finance team, led by the Chief Financial Officer exists to support the strategic and  financial aims of the Institute through the regular planning, controlling and reporting of the  financial operations including the Garvan Research Foundation (GRF) and Australian  Bioresources (ABR).  

 

Reporting to the Financial Controller, the Accountant is responsible for the day-to-day  financial transaction processing, ensuring accuracy, compliance and integrity of the general ledger. 

 

Salary: Up to $90,000 + 11.5% super + salary packaging (depending on experience) 

Employment Type: Permanent full-time

WHAT YOU WILL DO 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

 

The key responsibilities include: 

 

  • Preparation of general ledger reconciliations on a monthly basis. 

  • Preparation of the monthly Business Activity Statement for GIMR, ABR and GRF and ensuring compliance with tax regulations and other statutory requirements 

  • Process donation receipts regularly from imported donation batch data (PayPal, Stripe, credit card payments) and reconcile to the bank and to the GRF CRM on a monthly basis. 

  • Month-end tasks including allocation of donation income to projects and the donation reserve account, cost allocation journals, and post ad-hoc internal cost recovery income 

  • Liaise with GRF on correct allocation of donations and process donation adjustment / reclassification journals as required. 

  • Bank reconciliations, including recording interest income and fees 

  • Review and documentation of processes and procedures and recommendation for continuous improvement, ensuring compliance with controls 

  • Support the Financial Controller and CFO as required, for example with collating information for internal and external audits and contributing to key finance projects. 

  • All staff are required to comply with Garvan’s workplace polices (as amended from time to time) and especially Garvan’s Work Health & Safety (WHS) Policy, including working in accordance with the WHS management system at all times, as safety is Garvan’s number one priority 

  • Other duties as assigned 

 

 

ABOUT YOU 

 

EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED 

 

The key skills and experience include: 

 

  • At least 5 years related experience  

  • A degree in Accounting (or similar) 

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite – particularly Excel  

  • Experience with data analysis and reconciliation procedures 

  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles 

  • Strong administrative and procedural skills 

  • Excellent attention to detail 

  • Experience using Workday financials and Adaptive Insights (desirable)  

  • Experience  in  the  not-for-profit  sector  and/or  medical  research  industry  would  be advantageous  

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and an ability to engage with internal  stakeholders 

  • Initiative, integrity and excellent teamwork
