Job Description Summary:

The Jayhawk Construction Carpenter performs a variety of tasks related to construction, repair, and maintenance of facilities. This role involves expertise in multiple trades including carpentry, masonry, flooring, ceilings, and general maintenance to support facilities projects. The worker ensures that all tasks are carried out efficiently, following safety protocols, and maintaining a high standard of workmanship.

Job Duties:

  • Perform construction, maintenance, and repair tasks across a range of trades including carpentry, masonry, flooring, ceilings, and general building maintenance.

  • Plan and execute construction projects, including layout work, material selection, and estimation of time and resources required.

  • Install and repair building components such as walls, ceilings, floors, doors, windows, and hardware.

  • Conduct preventive maintenance for various building systems and surfaces, including ceilings, walls, and flooring.

  • Assist in demolition, renovation, and preparation of work sites for new construction projects.

  • Performs a variety of tasks involving strenuous manual labor in construction projects.

  • Assist project team in ensuring timely and successful completion of construction projects.

  • Performs rough framework with structural wood and metal walls, trusses and framing.

  • Removes and installs commercial doors, frames, hardware; install metal and wood frames in a variety of substrates, metal and wood doors and all types of hardware.

  • Performs layout and install backing.

  • Installs Toilet partitions and accessories.

  • Layout and install ceiling grid and tile.

  • Installs mud, tape drywall assemblies.

  • Layout and installs LVT, Carpet Tile, VCT and rubber base.

  • Troubleshoot and solve complex issues related to flooring, ceiling structures, and other building components, ensuring projects are completed efficiently.

  • Maintain tools and equipment in clean, working order; ensure job sites are left clean and safe after work completion.

  • Follow safety regulations, building codes, and quality standards in all tasks.

  • Communicate daily progress to supervisors, providing updates on project, encountered issues, and resolutions.

  • Must have a valid drivers license.

Work Environment/Project Types

Our projects and work orders are primarily conducted indoors across a range of spaces, including offices, laboratories, classrooms, and health system departments. The majority of our projects involve the following tasks:

  • Flooring installation and replacement: Includes vinyl composition tile (VCT), carpet tiles, and luxury vinyl tile (LVT), as well as comprehensive floor preparation.

  • Ceiling installation: Involves installing new ceiling grids with acoustical ceiling tiles.

  • Framing and Door Frame Install: Framing metal stud walls and headers, along with installing hollow metal frames for doors and interior windows.

  • Drywall work: Hanging, taping, and finishing sheetrock.

  • Occasional masonry and plaster repairs: Includes patching CMU (concrete masonry unit) walls and repairing plaster surfaces when necessary.

Required Qualifications

Education:  High school diploma or equivalent.

Work Experience:

  • 3+ years of experience in construction or facilities maintenance, with demonstrated competency in at least two of the following: carpentry, masonry, flooring, ceilings, or general building trades.

  • Experience reading blueprints, specifications, and schematics.

Preferred Qualifications

Work Experience:

  • Experience working in a facilities or institutional setting, such as a university or medical center.

  • Experience with Workday software for timing in and out for the day.

  • Equipment operation experience. (580 Tractor)

  • Proficiency in multiple trades.

  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.

  • Work independently and as part of a team.

  • Strong troubleshooting and critical thinking skills.

  • Strong communication skills for interacting with supervisors, contractors, and other team members

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
