Position Details
The Associate Director of First-Year Studies position reports to the Senior Director of FYS. This position collaborates with the Associate Dean of Teaching and Learning, the Senior Director of First-Year Studies (FYS) and other university departments to plan and implement program initiatives designed to increase student persistence and academic success.
ResponsibilitiesÂ
1. Assist the Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning and the Senior Director of First-Year Studies with development and implementation of student persistence and success initiatives in alignment with the Center’s strategic plan and the University’s mission statement.
2. Create, maintain, and educate instructors and mentors on the Canvas First-Year Organizational Site. This site serves as the instructional manual for the first-year course. This includes ensuring all documents are ADA accessible.
3. Work with the Senior Director of First-Year Studies on the:

Design and implementation of programing for first-year courses. Â

Development of course syllabi, supporting course material and presentations of bi-annual workshop of both instructors and peer mentors.

Work closely with FY instructors, peer mentors, Registrar, and academic advising to ensure all FY course scheduling information is accurate and students are placed in the correct course with appropriate instructor.
4. Create, implement and use Workday reports including student failure reports, students missing UTAMPA requirement for graduation, student course withdrawals and course rosters to enact changes in course scheduling and communicate changes to students, faculty, and staff.
5. Work with the Assistant Vice President of Enrollment on the verification of first-year students on campus during the first week of classes.
6. Work with the Senior Director of Academic Success Initiatives to train peer mentors on how to educate the first-year students’ on their academic progress in Workday.
7. Responsible for informing and keeping accurate records of trainings required of first-year instructors and peer mentors, such as Accessibility Training, ALICE Active Shooter, Spartans Teaching Online (STO) Certification, and Mental Health First Aid.
8. Identify opportunities to collaborate across organizational lines, including Wellness and Residence Life, to advance holistic initiatives that enrich the student experience.
9. Interpret first-year studies data and translate findings to create new initiatives that meet current student need.
10.Work with the Senior Director, First-Year Studies, and Senior Director of Academic Success Initiatives on assessment of First-Year Studies course retention initiatives. This includes developing and implementing expectations and metrics for student retention services using Navigate, updating user access for both FY faculty and mentors and tracking and assessing Navigate mentor usage.
11. Work with the Senior Director of First-Year Studies, the Coordinator of First-Year Community Engagement, campus partners, and the local community to design and offer opportunities for first-year out-of-classroom experiences to connect students to their faculty, the campus, and the local Tampa area community. This includes establishing and maintaining relationships with local area representatives of community venues such as Tampa Bay Lightning, Straz Performing Art Center, Tampa Museum of Art, Tampa History Museum, and others.
12. Oversee, coordinate, and supervise, with the assistance of the Senior Director of First-Year Studies, the FYS Peer Mentor Program, which includes:

Teaching one to two sections of the UTAMPA 250 course.

Recruiting, hiring, and supervising over 90 First-Year Studies Peer Mentors. FYS is the third largest employer of student workers on campus. Â This involves checking all onboarding documentation of each individual mentor, ensuring all information in Workday is kept up to date, and working with Human Resources and Payroll to resolve employment issues.

Approve timesheets on a weekly basis through Workday to ensure timely payment.

Pairing each mentor into a FY course based on faculty recommendations, peer mentor course schedule and student interest area.

Providing mentors with professional development opportunities to improve their leadership skills and opportunities to connect with faculty and professional staff on campus.

Attending FYS conferences and staying abreast of the latest research in FYS programming.
13. Serve on relevant university-wide committees as needed to support first-year students
14. Other duties as needed.

Qualifications
1.   Master's degree required; Ph.D. Preferred
2.   Proficiency with MS Office and Canvas (or other LMS) strongly preferred.
3.   Prior teaching experience preferred.
4.   Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
5.   Excellent oral, written, and organizational skills.
6.   High level of professionalism and diplomacy.
7.   Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
8.   Strong attention to detail.
9.   Knowledge of or the ability to quickly learn The University of Tampa software programs such as Workday and EAB-Navigate.
10.  Willingness to embrace new technologies and innovative organizational practices.

Summer: Â Monday-Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.
