Payroll Services at The University of Texas at Austin is responsible for producing and distributing payroll for approximately 29,000 employees. Purpose

Manage the Payroll Financials team within Payroll Services. Supervise a team of two Accountants and one Senior Financial Analyst. Settle and reconcile each payroll. Review and approve financial vouchers that bridge between Workday Payroll and the university legacy financial system. Review and approve daily commitment adjustments. Process weekly cost transfers. Assist in audit, open record, and subpoena requests. Oversee annual pooled fringe rate analysis. Review and approve payroll account reconciliations. Train and mentor team members. Work collaboratively with departmental and university leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the Financial Team to ensure timely and accurate posting of payroll accounting transactions. Ensure coverage for all critical processes on timesensitive tasks in order to meet payroll processing deadlines. Provide direction and act as final approver for team responsibilities including: Costing Allocations; Cost Transfers, posting of payroll accounting and fringe benefit transactions; Bank Settlement and account reconciliations.
  • Counsel, mentor and evaluate job performance of team members. Encourage development and promote learning opportunities. Help foster cooperation within the office to provide a positive and healthy work environment. Provide leadership, promote integrity, teamwork, respect, opportunity, ownership and open communication with others.
  • Work closely with the Enterprise Business Information Technology Solutions (eBITS) team, and internal financial and payroll team members to validate and review Workday functionality and system updates to make sure bridging configurations, calculations, integrations and reporting are working as expected.
  • Assist team with responding to email and phone inquiries, research and analyze questions from campus departments, and provide support for escalation of issues as appropriate.
  • Monitor payroll calendar to ensure accurate and timely reporting. Coordinate closeout of the payroll month with other teams in Payroll to ensure all payroll accounting transactions, fringes and remittances are posted to Accounting for the closeout month.
  • Oversee interactions and with external and internal auditors to ensure continued compliance and adherence with applicable state and federal laws related to payroll, human resources and financial operations.

Schedule

Monday – Friday 8am – 5pm; Occasional overtime hours may be required.
 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Management, or Business Administration. Professional level accounting or financial experience.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Attention to detail and excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member in a professional manner. Strong business process skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills. Proficient at Microsoft Office Products, and the Internet.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, or Business Administration. CPA.
  • Experience with Workday HCM, Time, Absence, Compensation, and/or Workday Payroll.
  • Familiarity with UT-Austin policies, practices and administrative functions.
  • Familiarity with the university’s mainframe system (DEFINE) and/or other university systems.
  • Proven analytical skills. Expert level Microsoft Excel and/or database experience.
  • Experience managing complex processes and building in controls to promote efficiency and consistency.
  • Experience writing and developing process documentation and guidelines.

Salary Range

$70,000
