The Enterprise People Technology team at Walmart Global Tech is responsible for the deployment and adoption of people technology solutions across the enterprise. Our work touches every associate and manager, enabling them to focus on what matters most: serving our customers and members.
About the Role
As Director of Software Engineering, you’ll lead a high-performing team of Workday functional consultants and software engineers, architecting and delivering scalable, robust solutions on the Workday and OpenStack platforms. You will bridge the gap between business needs and technical execution, ensuring the adoption, optimization, and modernization of Walmart’s People Technology ecosystem.
What You’ll Do
- Lead the configuration, integration, and enhancement of Workday and OpenStack applications, leveraging cloud-native and distributed platform engineering.
- Drive end-to-end delivery of scalable, high-quality solutions that support millions of Walmart associates and applicants globally.
- Oversee solution design, ensuring modular, extensible, and functional architecture that meets business and non-functional requirements (scalability, security, disaster recovery, etc.).
- Guide teams in risk analysis, cost analysis, requirements classification, and user story development for both functional and non-functional needs.
- Direct scoping, estimation, and prioritization of product requirements to deliver Minimum Viable Products (MVPs) and drive continuous product enhancement.
- Champion best practices in coding, testing, and DevOps, including CI/CD, code management, secure SDLC, and telemetry.
- Oversee program monitoring, defect management, and troubleshooting, ensuring high product quality and rapid issue resolution.
- Foster a culture of technical excellence, continuous learning, and innovation across Workday and OpenStack engineering teams.
- Build, mentor, and empower a team of engineering managers and software developers, cultivating a high-performance, inclusive culture.
- Partner with product management and key stakeholders to align technology initiatives with business outcomes and workforce strategies.

- Deep technical expertise in Workday (all modules) and OpenStack engineering, with strong experience in cloud-based HR platforms and distributed systems.
- Proven record of technical leadership, people management, and talent development in large-scale, complex environments.

- Advanced knowledge of risk analysis, cost analysis, requirements management, software architecture, distributed systems, coding standards, testing, DevOps, and program monitoring.

Live Better U is a Walmart-paid education benefit program for full-time and part-time associates in Walmart and Sam’s Club facilities. Programs range from high school completion to bachelor’s degrees, including English Language Learning and short-form certificates. Tuition, books, and fees are completely paid for by Walmart.

The annual salary range for this position is $130,000.00-$260,000.00
Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses.

Minimum Qualifications…

Option 1: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and6 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.
Option 2: 8 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.
3 years’ supervisory experience.
