Summary of Position:

The HR Manager, Payroll will be an integral member of the HR team reporting to the Director of HR. This position will oversee the organization’s payroll functions, ensuring pay is processed on time, accurately, and in compliance with government regulations. This role will serve as the subject matter expert and escalation point to resolve payroll issues, and continuously improve processes and implement new initiatives, as needed. This role requires strategic partnerships with internal/external customers and strong customer service skills.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

The following represents most of the duties performed by the position but is not meant to be all-inclusive nor prevent other duties from being assigned when necessary. Employees are expected to comply with all regulatory, environmental, and safety rules and standards, as well as corporate policies.

As a HR Manager, Payroll, you will be responsible for:

  • Leading day-to-day operations of Workday payroll, time tracking, absence, and all related functions for multi-state bi-weekly US payroll for multiple companies.
  • Ensuring accurate and timely processing of payroll updates including new hires, terminations, and employee changes.
  • Serving as the subject matter expert for payroll and all payroll related projects.
  • Acting as escalation point to resolve payroll issues and as employee contact for payroll-related questions.
  • Processing standard and complex payroll transactions including retro calculations, manual adjustments, error resolution and analysis of root cause.
  • Maintaining payroll records and data for the calculation of payroll for multiple pay groups.
  • Partnering with HR and Benefits personnel to ensure employee data, compensation and benefit deductions are correct and promptly funded.
  • Partnering with Accounting and Corporate tax to reconcile Workday payroll records to appropriate company made payments during month-end close.
  • Providing funding amounts to Treasury prior to bank draw.
  • Ensuring the accuracy of the account posting rules for all on/off-cycle payments.
  • Facilitating audits by providing records and documentation to auditors.
  • Inputting and managing garnishment information for employees in Workday once received by the appropriate state agency.
  • Identifying and recommending updates to payroll processes, service levels with third-parties, systems, and procedures.
  • Ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local payroll, wage, and hour laws and best practices.
  • Manages entire HR process for employee worker’s compensation, in conjunction with insurance broker.
    • Ensuring alignment between employer pay and worker’s compensation.
    • Completing necessary forms related to initiating claims and providing required wage statements.
  • Working with Insurance & Risk to provide requested payroll information for insurance renewals and audits.
  • Performing all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Must have a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Human Resources, or related field.
  • Must have a minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience within Payroll.
  • Workday Payroll experience is highly preferred.
  • Have extensive knowledge of the payroll function including preparation, balancing, internal control, and payroll taxes.
  • Have knowledge of payroll regulations, laws, and processes.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (specifically in Excel is required).
  • Have strong analytical skills with focus on process improvement and knowledge transfer.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage well through ambiguity and complexity.
  • Have good communication with interpersonal skills.
  • Have strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Must be meticulous with the ability to multi-task with attention to accuracy.
  • Be able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Be able to work with and maintain confidential information.

  • Operates in a professional and/or business casual office environment.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

  • This is a full-time position.
  • Monday – Thursday (9 hours) & Friday (4 hours).
