Position Summary

The Staff Accountant is responsible for modeling the Compassus values of Compassion, Integrity, Excellence, Teamwork, and Innovation and for promoting the Compassus philosophy, using the 6 Pillars of Success as the foundation. S/he is responsible for upholding the Code of Ethical Conduct and for promoting positive working relationships within the company, among all departments, and all external stakeholders. The Staff Accountant performs essential accounting tasks, including but not limited to journal entry, reconciliation preparation, and analytical assignments, under moderate supervision. Additionally, s/he aids in the company's adherence to internal control regulations.

Position Specific Responsibilities

  • Prepares and analyzes journal entries and proposes adjustments as necessary.
  • Prepares general ledger account reconciliations.
  • Maintains records of routine accounting transactions.
  • Assists with accounting projects under direct supervision.
  • Maintains documentation of assigned tasks and projects.
  • Assists in the analysis and interpretation of accounting records for use by management, as required.
  • Aids in the preparation of financial and operating reports including trial balances, adjustments and closing entries.
  • Prepares schedules with supporting documentation for external auditors.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor's degree with a major in Accounting, Business, or Finance required.
  • At least one (1) year of related experience required.
  • Experience with reconciliation functions, posting journal entries, and month-end processing required.
  • Three (3) or more years of related experience preferred.
  • Workday Financial experience is highly preferred.

Skills

  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage.
  • Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from leaders, colleagues, investors, and external parties. Strong written and verbal communications.
  • Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to understand, read, write, and speak English. Articulates and embraces hospice philosophy. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially in Excel. Basic knowledge of financial systems (e.g., General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Fixed Assets, Financial Reporting tools). General knowledge of GAAP requirements. General knowledge of internal controls, compliance and auditing. Understanding of taxation – income, sales & use tax desired. Demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills. Strong organizational and time management skills. Excellent customer service skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality of information, such as patient and Company files. Demonstrated experience in continuous improvement initiatives, root cause analysis, and project management desired.

Physical Demands and Work Environment: The demands of this role necessitate a team member to effectively perform essential functions. Adaptations can be made to accommodate team members with disabilities. Regular standing, walking, and manual dexterity are fundamental, along with the ability to lift and move objects up to 25 pounds. Visual acuity requirements include close and distance vision, color and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
