As a Senior Indirect Tax Accountant, you will be responsible for all U.S. and Canada indirect tax compliance including but not limited to sales and use tax, personal property tax, GST and HST. The senior indirect tax accountant will support the Director in making sure that Hagerty complies with various state requirements, including compliance and audit support, as well as assist with tax research to provide technical support on all indirect tax matters.

What you’ll do

  • Accurately prepare and timely file all US and Canadian indirect tax returns.
  • Reconcile various sales tax reports with monthly sales data and bill of sales from daily transactions, maintain the data analysis, and report out to business units.
  • Prepare journal entries related to indirect taxes.
  • Liaise with business units to prepare tax and DMV documents on a daily basis.
  • Investigate and resolve indirect tax notices and support tax examinations on indirect taxes by gathering, organizing, and tracking information requests by auditors.
  • Provide business support on indirect tax matters.
  • Prepare the Company’s sales and use reconciliations and indirect tax reserve analysis on a quarterly basis.
  • Coordinate payments with Treasury.
  • Assist with the state and local registration when we enter a new jurisdiction.
  • Assist with special projects and tax planning initiatives.
  • Provide support for and maintain documentation related to internal controls under Sarbanes Oxley requirements.
  • Remain current on state and local tax legislation, changes to compliance requirements and filing deadlines, etc.

This might describe you

  • Proven U.S. sales and use and other indirect tax practical and technical expertise.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience performing tax law research with tax research tools as well as ability to navigate Divisions/Departments of Motor Vehicles websites.
  • Working knowledge of general taxability concepts and ability to apply that knowledge to new transactions and situations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to organize and prioritize.
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment and work under pressure with a sense of urgency.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently.

Over and above

  • CPA preferred but not required. 
  • Experience with Workday Accounting is an asset. 
  • Audit defense experience and business sales tax permit registration a plus.

  • This role can be worked from any U.S. remote location.
  • Familiarity with public company requirements, including Sarbanes Oxley and key regulations, if applicable. For SOX compliant roles, responsible for designing, executing, and documenting internal controls where they have been identified as owners to prevent errors in financial reporting, processes, and business operations. Including attestation to the completeness, accuracy, and compliance of all financial reporting data, where applicable.
